Part 2: Writing

Choose ONE topic. Write about number 1 or 2. Minimum lenght: 100 words.

1. You are a journalist. Write a short newspaper story about the labor exploitation of some groups of immigrants in Spain.

2. [Chosen] You are the representative of your country before the United Nations Organization (UNO). Write a speech addressed to the UNO general delegates denouncing the resurgence of slavery.

"Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Representatives of the Council,

I am here today to denounce the situation of some countries where individual freedom is not an example for a globalized world in the XXI century. Some states are, in order to acquire the goods of another, creating modern slaves, people who are working hard not only in order to earn some cents for their mining labour: they only have this way to save their lives.

My speech is about a special country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where people have been forced to work in mines to extract Coltan, sometimes named Tantalum. Rwandan militia, as the Interahamwe ("Those who do not kill alone"), the CNDP of the General Laurent Nkunda, and sometimes the Congolese army too, have been denounced because of their human rights violation since 1997, when the war in DRC had involved several African countries.

Why couldn't the western forces end this situation? Because of you. All the people who sat on a chair at the beginning of this conference is related and responsible of those crimes. Not only militia, and hungry people in Africa are killing mining workers in that country. We are too. I think most of you would know which destiny the Coltan from the Congo has, this is not a new discovery.

The Coltan is in several of your pockets, inside your mobile phones, you have Congolese blood in your pockets. But not only Nokia, Motorola and Sony Ericsson have to pay for their crimes. In all our houses we have computers. And our children have Xbox and Play Station. Aren't we responsible?

And you, the Belgian representative, must take part in the solution. I am not refering to the colonial history of the belgian country there, but the implication of several corporations in the extracion of Coltan, and reporting it to Kigali (the exportations of Rwandan Coltan are the same quantity as the Congolese, but Rwanda has no Coltan), as Traxys, Trademet SA, Umicore any many more.

But... these chairs are comfortable, aren't they?

We are satisfied resolving the problems of this world in the United Nations Assembly, because we feel useful and important. Doesn't matter people who dies everyday in Africa, it has become a topic, and we have no solutions to the catastrophical situation, have we?

I wish most of you in a Congolese mining exploitation, working with your hands. You would then take part in the atrocities committed by your economic and comfort hungry. Well, then you wouldn't exist for those who were here."
